Message from the chairman

In “Doon Film School” we believe that creativity lies within us. Our upbringing and value systems teaches us to suppress our creative urges therefore making us forget to see the world with an individualistic perspective. The courage then, to express your perception of the world, defines an artist. Be it a filmmaker, a painter, a poet, a musician. The courage to face an empty blank canvas, and to make the first brush stroke. That first brush stroke that explores the rest of the painting, the rest of the symphony, the rest of the film. At Doon Film School , we encourage the students to explore the artist within themselves and then equip them with the necessary tools and technology and guide them in the right direction so that they become capable of exploring and expressing themselves to the world .

Words from the principal

A building stands on 4 pillars while a movie stands on 5; Director being the central pillar and others being equally important stands in the support with an objective to execute the director’s vision.

1)Director – A director is the most important and central pillar of a movie and therefore is called the captain of the ship. A film director controls a film’s artistic and dramatic aspects and visualize a screenplay while guiding the film crew and actors in the fulfilment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design and all the creative aspects of filmmaking.

2)Screenwriter – A screenwriter is the second most important pillar of a film therefore can be called the architect of a film . A screenwriter transforms a story into a screenplay only after which production can take place. A screenwriter’s job is to portray the emotions of the story in the form of actions and give the story a proper structure.

3)Cinematographer – A cinematographer is the third pillar who’s job is to see the world through the eyes of the lens. A cinematographer is the second person in command after Director as he is responsible to capture the Director’s vision with an objective to be projected on the silver screen; therefore playing a very important role in filmmaking.

4)Editor – An editor is the fourth pillar as whatever visuals are captured and sounds recorded , out of those the best ones are selected and arranged in proper sequences. A film editor manages material such as camera footage , dialogue , sound effects, graphics and special effects to produce a final film. Editing is a key role in the post production process and the skills of an editor can determine the quality and delivery of the finished film.

5)Actor – An actor is the fifth pillar and is responsible to bring the emotions of the story alive on the screen. An actor should be well versed in “Navarasa” meaning 9 emotions. An actor’s responsibility is to master the emotions so that he/she can portray the right emotion at the right time on the screen.

Filmmaking is a collaborative process and all the pillars should be well co-ordinated and strong. Failing of any one pillar will make the building fall or the movie fail. A great film is made when all the pillars are strong and are in powerful collaboration and seamless coordination.
